Street Dance

Street at MTSD

In our studio, Street Dance is a fun, upbeat “add-on” class designed to energise our students. Each session is a fast-paced, action-packed 30-minute burst of movement, set to contemporary music. Classes are full of positive energy and encourage students to let loose, explore personal style and enjoy dancing in a relaxed, supportive environment. One of the most valuable aspects of our Street Dance programme is the opportunity for students to connect across age groups. Junior Street Dance (ages 7–11) and Senior Street Dance (ages 12–18) allow dancers to mix beyond their usual peer groups, building encouraging friendships and mutual respect as they learn together and perform for one another. Confidence is boosted in this shared experience.

The Evolution of Street Dance

Street Dance is an umbrella term for a range of energetic urban dance styles that first emerged in the 1970s within African-American and Latin communities in the USA. Originally developed as a form of self-expression and social connection in shared spaces such as streets, parks and school playgrounds, Street Dance has since evolved into a vibrant and influential part of popular culture. Today, it is seen across music videos, live performance, social media and dance studios worldwide, incorporating styles such as hip-hop, locking, popping and house.

Street Dance On Stage

Street also plays a vibrant role in our full-scale productions, where it adds colour, character and contemporary flair. Over the years, students have explored a wide range of imaginative themes — from slick poker games and swashbuckling pirates to old-school ’90s hip-hop and high-energy “yellow brick road” divas — giving students the chance to take their Street Dance to a heightened theatrical level.

Inspiration Behind the Moves

Our sessions are inspired by leading LA-based choreographer and dancer Matt Steffanina and his community of dancers and choreographers, whose dynamic hip-hop style resonates strongly with young people. Rather than focusing on syllabus or examinations, sessions prioritise enjoyment and performance skills. Students learn a variety of short, engaging routines throughout the year, gradually developing a diverse repertoire that is proudly showcased in an end-of-year presentation for family and friends.
