Modern Theatre

The ISTD Syllabus

We follow the ISTD Modern Theatre syllabus, which has been carefully designed to offer appropriate challenges at every age and stage of development. Students build a safe and secure technical foundation through structured preparation exercises, developing strength, flexibility, coordination, and clarity of line. Classes incorporate exciting floor work, travelling steps, kicks, leaps, and turns, with a strong emphasis on contrasting movement qualities, dynamic focus, and energetic performance skills.

What is Modern Theatre Dance?

Modern Theatre is a dynamic and versatile dance genre rooted in the world of musical theatre. The energy and style seen on the West End stage is reflected right here our Abingdon studio! This vibrant dance form reflects current trends in theatrical performance, drawing influences from jazz, contemporary, and lyrical styles. Modern Theatre is constantly evolving, allowing students to explore expressive movement, musicality and performance that is relevant to today.

Modern Theatre Dance On Stage

Modern Theatre plays a central role in our biannual productions, offering limitless opportunities for choreographic creativity and originality. In rehearsals and performances, our Modern dancers fully inhabit character and movement, ultimately bringing the stage to life with imagination and flair. Over the years, audiences at the Amey Theatre have been entertained by everything from funky mermaids and playful court jesters to super charged 70s rockers and powerful Bond Girls — each performance showcasing the dynamic energy and theatrical impact that Modern Theatre dance brings.

Our Training Journey

Our youngest dancers, aged 3–4, explore essential gross motor skills, including running, jumping, balancing, crawling, and rolling. These fundamental movement skills support physical development and build confidence, preparing students for the Modern Theatre syllabi. From around age 5, students explore the Primary and Grade 1 work as part of our Combined Ballet, Tap, and Modern classes. This structured and progressive pathway continues through the graded system and into the higher levels of Grades 5, 6 and Intermediate. Modern Theatre remains combined with Tap up to approximately Grade 3, providing students with a broad and balanced dance foundation. As ability and experience grow, the styles are then offered as separate classes, allowing more focused training and increased time to refine skills, artistry, and performance quality.
